This sounds like what blacks were told when they wanted to be able to marry out of their race. Yeah, at one time the country chose to have slavery, segregated bathrooms and lunch counters and even segregated marriages. Did that make it right? No. I’m hearing about how the protesters are wrong and should stay home. How many of the protesters in Selma were told that? They used fire hoses and dogs to tell them to stay home. The country had to be dragged kicking and screaming into giving these folks equal rights and it looks like the it’s going to be the same thing with gay people. My daughter and I have talked about this and she has made this observation about why people are so scared of gay people. You can’t look in a room full of people and know which ones are gay. It’s not like they are black and easily identified. And I think that people are somehow afraid that contact with a gay person will “make them gay”. It’s all fear. And that fear makes it easy for some people to dehumanize other people and to get into this group mentality of us against them. That’s what happened when black people struggled to get the right to vote and it’s what’s happening now. This is the next civil rights movement. It's going to be a battle but one worth fighting. How can we say America stands for freedom when we consciously deny a whole group of people their civil rights? How can we say America stands for freedom when we so easily vilify a whole population because of who they love? We are on the eve of change. We have a black president; we had a woman vice-presidential candidate. Isn’t it time we give gay people their civil rights??

I'm so angry about prob 8 I've been ranting about it. I know I don't live in the US, but this whole thing is so sad. :C
We proclaim ourselves as "enlightened" because we now have a black President-elect in Barack Obama, and (as you pointed out) because we had a female vice-presidential candidate. I wondered if I would ever see this in my lifetime, and now I have, and that's a good thing, but...
California has had same-sex marriages performed since June, so are they going to be mass-nullified by the church-inspired zealots? I understand that there the ban had more than 52 percent of the vote, even though it had been projected to win by several Californian news outlets. But what I find equally disturbing is that opponents of same-sex marriage won by even bigger margins in both Arizona and Florida.
For those of you in California who are protesting and looking for ways to have this vote overturned, use some sense and follow the struggle of us 'old-timer' civil rights activists of the '60s. There is strength in numbers, and there are residents of Florida and Arizona, both gay and straight, who are appalled by these voting results. Roll up your sleeves and get in touch with them, make alliances as were done during the civil rights struggles of the 1960s. It can work - it does work!
The Miami Herald reported that the ban on gay marriage, which is already illegal in Florida, is going to be enshrined in the Florida State Constitution. The so-called "Florida Marriage Protection Amendment" defines marriage as a bond between straight couples and renders invalid any other union that is "treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent.''
Opponents view that language as a threat to domestic partnerships, arrangements recognized by some local governments in Florida which ensure access to shared health insurance benefits and hospital visitation rights for gay couples and unmarried heterosexuals.
''The master plan of our opposition is social engineering to make sure homosexuals have no rights,'' said C.J. Ortuño, Executive D irector of SAVE, Miami-Dade's largest gay r ights group. What ou need to understand that once something l ike this has been embedded within a state's c onstitution, it's about 500% harder to get i t repealed, and why strategic alliances need o be formed right now between members of the a ctivist communities in California, Florida a nd Arizona. It's the ONLY way that a trend l ike this can be stopped.
